GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Thurston 911 Communications (TCOMM) is seeking a Radio Systems
Technician to assist with the maintenance and repair of our legacy
radio system and the installation, programming, and testing of a
new $30 million, digital, P25 trunked land mobile radio system.
-Radio Systems Technicians are responsible for new and existing
radio transmitting and receiving equipment, microwave, and
simulcast equipment used by the Agency. -
TCOMM is the single-source 911 call and dispatch center in Thurston
County and is responsible for receiving and recording all 911
emergency calls for help from within the County, dispatching the
appropriate public safety responders to the emergency (Law
Enforcement, Eire, EMS), and operates and manages the Thurston
County Public Safety Radio Network.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Installation, maintenance and repair of new and existing radio
transmitting and receiving equipment including microwave and
simulcast components.
- Installation, optimization, programming, and maintenance of
console equipment, recording equipment, and electronic devices.
Assemble, install and maintain backup power systems, and
optimization of radio, paging, and telephone equipment. Knowledge
of wide and local area networking, computer and internet protocol
systems as they apply to radio systems and communications
networks.
- Origination, design, fabrication, adjustment, repair, and/or
replacement of systems, circuits, and components.
- Locate, diagnose and correct malfunctions occurring in base
stations, portables, mobiles, microwave radio and multiplex
equipment, auxiliary power equipment, microprocessor-based radio
dispatch consoles, closed circuit video cameras and monitors,
recorders, pagers, amplifiers, antennas, cables, and electrical
systems.
- Work may also involve specification writing. Preparation,
compilation and maintenance of various radio operations records,
F.C.C. licenses, parts inventory records, and equipment activity
logs may be required.
- Performs other duties as assigned.WORKING CONDITIONSWork is
performed in an office environment and outdoors, requiring driving
an Agency-owned vehicle to various locations. Exposure to a variety
of weather conditions may occur while driving or conducting
fieldwork. Bending, climbing, crawling under desks or into tight
places, sitting, stooping, and lifting required to a maximum of 70
lbs. Physical agility to walk on various types of terrain and
working with electronic equipment capable of electric shock.Normal
work hours will be standard business hours. Occasionally, Radio
Systems Technicians will be required to work overtime, following an
emergency repairs rotation of two weeks on / one month off.
-Additionally, Radio Systems Technicians may be called-in during
off-hours for emergency situations.
QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or GED and a vocational education, from a
recognized institution, in technical electronics training program
(with emphasis in radio communication technology). Additional
related experience may be substituted for vocational education on a
year for year basis.
- Three years' experience in design, engineering, installation,
programming, maintenance, testing and repair of radio systems,
including VHF, UHF Microwave and associated electronic equipment.
Equivalent military training may be substituted for the required
experience on a year-for-year basis, up to a maximum of two
years.
- Current Washington State Driver's License or have requested and
obtained an appropriate accommodation.
- General Radio Telephone Operator license as issued by the FCC
(Federal Communications Commission) or equivalent industry
certification is desired.
