Learn more Service Competitive Pay scale & grade GS 11 - 13 Salary $72,030 to $133,465 per year Appointment type Permanent Work schedule Full-Time - Full Time Duties SummaryYou will serve as a Research Engineer and Project Manager in the Office of Vehicle Crash Avoidance and Electronic Controls, reporting to the Chief, Electronic Systems Safety Research Division.----ResponsibilitiesAs a General Engineer, you will:Coordinate, manage and conduct research leading to the improved safety of motor vehicles.--Direct cyber security research activities related to vulnerabilities and cyber threats to existing vehicles in-use today, and will conduct research to advance the industry's knowledge in this area to improve cybersecurity resiliency of future motor vehicle designs.Lead research projects related to automotive cybersecurity, vehicle software assurance and electronic systems functional safety.Conceive and plan technical research projects, and will independently manage those projects approved by senior leadershipThis position is perfect for transportation professionals seeking a position that will provide an opportunity to utilize leadership skills and technical expertise within the Government sector. We are seeking highly qualified individuals who are willing to meet the fast-paced challenges of public service while supporting our mission to reduce the number of fatalities and injuries resulting from motor vehicle crashes. NHTSA desires someone who is a motivated self-starter who can work independently and effectively communicate within the agency and with external industry stakeholders. The ideal candidate will have experience in advanced automotive safety engineering, electronics, software, contract technical management, and outreach efforts. Advanced analytical, communication, and leadership skills to recommend approaches, lead multiple research projects, build teams, evaluate scientific findings, anticipate problems, and recommend alternative courses of action if necessary are also attributes of the ideal candidateTravel RequiredOccasional travel - Some travel is required. QualificationsTo meet the minimum qualifications for this position, you must (1) meet the Education Requirement for the series, (2) provide a copy of transcripts for verification, AND (3) meet either the education or experience qualifications for the grade at which you are requesting consideration. To qualify for the GS-11 on Experience, you must have at least one year of experience equal or equivalent to the GS-09 it must include:Experience applying basic engineering concepts, principles, and practices applicable to automotive safety technologies, electronics, and/or software.Experience with analyzing, evaluating, and synthesizing research project results in coordination with management.Experience in coordinating with management for the identification, analysis and planning of vehicle safety research needs and strategies, to include the formulation of research questions and research project statements of work.To qualify for the GS-11 on Education alone, you must have: 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree. You can also qualify based on a combination of higher level graduate education and experience. This must be fully supported by your resume and transcripts, provided with your application. To qualify for the GS-12 on Experience, you must have at least one year of experience equal or equivalent to the GS-11 it must include:Experience applying emerging engineering concepts, principles, and practices applicable to automotive safety technologies, electronics, and/or software.Experience in independently analyzing, evaluating, and synthesizing research needs and strategies, as well as research project results in preparing draft presentation materials for immediate management.Experience in independently formulating research questions and research project statements of work, and managing the ensuing research projects.--You cannot qualify on education at the GS-12 level; you must have experience.To qualify for the GS-13 on Experience, you must have at least one year of experience equal or equivalent to the GS-12 it must include:Experience applying advanced engineering concepts, principles, and practices and authoring applicable guidance and/or best practices applicable to automotive safety technologies, electronics, and/or software.Experience with independently analyzing and evaluating research results of advanced automotive technology research projects and briefing the results to NHTSA and external industry stakeholders.Experience in leading the formulation of research questions and research project statements of work, conducting source selections, recommending contract awards, and managing multiple complex research projects.You cannot qualify on education at the GS-13 level; you must have experience. Combination of education or training: college level education, training and/or technical experience that has furnished (1) a thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying engineering, and (2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the branches of engineering.The adequacy of such background must be demonstrated by one of the following:1. Professional registration or licensure - current registration as an Engineer Intern (EI), engineer in Training (EIT), or licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE).2. Written Test - Evidence of having successfully passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination, or any other written test required for professional registration by an engineering licensure board in the various States, the District of Columbia, Guam, and Puerto Rico.3. Specified academic courses - Successful completion of at least 60 semester hours of courses in the physical, mathematical, and engineering sciences which included the courses as specified in Paragraph A above.4. Related curriculum - Successful completion of a curriculum leading to a bachelor's degree in an appropriate scientific field, e.g., engineering technology, physics, chemistry, architecture, computer science, mathematics, hydrology, or geology, may be accepted in lieu of a bachelor's degree in engineering, provided the applicant had at least 1 year of professional engineering experience acquired under professional engineering supervision and guidance. There should be either an established plan of intensive training to develop professional engineering competence, or several years of prior professional engineering type experience.
