Special Note This is a full-time, overtime-eligible position on the Olympia campus of The Evergreen State College.

Position Purpose This position performs journey level work in trades, such as plumbing, pipe fitting, and steam fitting, including maintenance, inspection, installation, and repair of Steam and Mechanical Systems located in campus facilities and oversees the work of entry level, semi-skilled, and skilled employees. This position is also responsible for operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting steam and mechanical equipment, including, but not limited to, boilers, pressure vessels, pressurized pipes, pumps, traps, valves, etc.

Nature and Scope This position reports to the Maintenance Mechanic 4 (working title: Steam and Mechanical Supervisor) and is responsible for overall operation and maintenance of campus boiler, hot water, and steam systems. This position plans, assigns, and supervises work of other positions, such as Stationary Engineer 1, Maintenance Mechanic 1, and Maintenance Mechanic 2 on assigned steam and boiler related work projects.

Essential Functions *Perform journey level maintenance, inspection, installation, and repair of Steam and Mechanical Systems. *Plan, assign, and supervise the work of others operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting steam and mechanical equipment, including, but not limited to, boilers, pressure vessels, pressurized pipes, pumps, traps, and, valves, etc. *Enforce safety regulations at all times and maintain safety precautions as appropriate, supervise the safe operation and maintenance of systems, tools, and equipment. *Direct the analysis of boiler feed water samples and determine water treatment. *Update all necessary charts and records and prepare reports on heating plant operations. *Test steam and mechanical systems to verify performance; confer with supervisor regarding maintenance and operational problems and recommend corrective action. *Develop and conduct preventative maintenance programs for steam and mechanical systems. *Coordinate project work with other units when necessary and maintain prompt communication with client departments on project status. *Be available for emergency and unanticipated situations regarding all aspects of the campus facilities. *Estimate materials and time needed to complete jobs. *Attend meetings and training courses as assigned. *Perform other duties as required.

Additional Duties

Knowledge Skills and Abilities *Knowledge of boiler law, safety precautions, record keeping methods, fuels, materials, and tools used in operation and maintenance of high pressure boilers and auxiliary equipment, boiler room safety, heating, lighting, ventilating, power, and other related mechanical equipment, and standard types of automatic controls. *Ability to test and analyze operation of steam boilers and auxiliary equipment. *Ability to keep records, make written reports, and estimate materials and time needed to complete jobs. *Strong interpersonal, communication, and customer service skills. *Ability to safely operate and maintain tools and equipment commonly used for plumbing and steam fitting tasks and instruct/train others as needed. *Ability to work effectively with and/or supervise people from diverse backgrounds and have an awareness and sensitivity to social and cultural diversity. *Skill in planning, assigning, training, and supervising the work of skilled, semi-skilled, and entry-level trades workers. *Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of industrial or commercial operation areas. *Skill and ability to follow and enforce safety standards and practices to ensure compliance with federal and state safety rules and laws. *Ability to work independently and demonstrate good decisions making skills. *Ability to perform physically demanding labor, including performing work that includes lifting and/or moving heavy materials up to 80 pounds unaided, pushing or pulling equipment/materials, climbing and balancing on ladders using equipment, reaching, stooping, twisting, and/or crouching, and performing repetitive motions. *Able to work in a variety of settings, including various job sites, at elevated heights, in confined spaces, indoors and outdoors, and in all weather conditions. *Ability to respond to urgent and/or emergency situations; understanding of the importance of the safety and security of the campus community. *Ability to use computers to enter and respond to work orders, create and modify spreadsheets and documents, conduct internet research, purchase supplies and equipment, email, and manage time and leave records. *Ability to work independently and collaboratively, make difficult decisions in a timely manner, and plan work initiatives and facilitate work without direct supervision.

Minimum Qualifications

Desired Qualifications *Applicable steam engineer's license. *Current PL01 plumber license/certificate, or equivalent. *Three years of journey-level experience in boiler operations, including feed water systems, gas, and fuel oil fired high-pressure boiler systems and all auxiliary equipment, water chilling systems, and related combustion controls and safety devices OR certificate of completion of an advanced Stationary Engineer course from an accredited vocational/technical school or community college and two years of experience in the operation, maintenance, and/or repair of stationary or marine high pressure boilers and heating systems. *Experience working in a large industrial, commercial, or public physical plant which may include high-pressure heating or power plant. *Experience that reflects a strong commitment to customer service.

Conditions of Employment *Must provide proof of identity and employment eligibility within three days of beginning work. *This position is part of a bargaining unit and covered by a collective bargaining agreement. *Prior to a new hire, a background check including criminal record history will be conducted. Information from the background check will not necessarily preclude employment but will be considered in determining the applicant's suitability and competence to perform in the position. *Prior to an official offer of employment, a Declaration Regarding Sexual Misconduct form must be submitted to the college per RCW 28B.112.080. The college will contact current and past employers to verify this information. Applicants who provide inaccurate information in their declaration will be disqualified and, if the inaccuracies are discovered after the applicant has been hired, it shall be grounds for termination. *Must be available to work a standby schedule which may include nights, weekends, and holidays and be able to respond to after-hours calls. *Must possess a valid driver's license.
