The Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS), Economic Services Administration (ESA), Community Services Division (CSD), has an exciting opportunity for a Social Services Specialist 5 to work at the Tri-County Community Services Office (CSO).  We need your leadership skills to lead a team of Social Service Specialists in five Community Services Offices (Colville, Newport, Republic, Okanogan, and Wenatchee) across Region 1.  These Social Services Specialists have the responsibility for comprehensively assessing individual client needs and determining the appropriate level of services while respecting client choice.  Apply today and join us in transforming lives!

In this role, you will supervise the delivery of specialized case management, specifically assessments, and your staff's collaborative approach when working with clients to ensure Social Service Specialists meet all casework management directives. You will also have the responsibility of acting in the Administrator's place when the Administrator is unavailable, out of the office, or when assigned. Critical thinking skills, responsible decision-making, collaboration with your management team, and adaptive leadership are essential for this role.

 

Some of what you will be doing:

  • Recruit, hire, train and evaluate staff through consistent monitoring of staffs quality and quantity of work while maintaining on ongoing dialogue with the staff member
  • Participate in-home or alternate site visits to evaluate situations and conduct assessments of vulnerable and disabled applicants, recipients, and/or children when the client(s) is unable to come into the Community Service Office
  • Create a supportive environment that allows staff to advance and succeed through coaching and mentoring
  • Provide instructions and interpretations regarding policies, procedures or laws governing eligibility and work performance
  • Coordinate services with community partners, other state agencies, Local Area Planning networks, and other CSD partners to maintain, develop and implement programs and activities that prepare CSD customers for self-sufficiency
  • Attend meetings locally, virtually, and across the state with possible overnight travel with an expectation of full participation, and maintenance of information to share when returning to the CSO
  • Establish team workloads, workflow, and quality standards.
  • Audit work performed by Social Service Specialists, including eligibility determinations and case management activities, to ensure that appropriate data gathering and verification techniques are utilized and that findings are adequately documented
  • Be CSO point of contact when assigned by the Administrator when they are out of the building

  • Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to adapt to each staff persons learning and communication styles

  • Ability to build effective working relationships with assigned subordinates, administration officials, management team, service staff, partner agencies, contract providers, and the public
  • Knowledge of management principles and operating methods 
  • Ability to exhibit tact, courtesy, and discretion in all work situations.
  • Ability to multi-task and deal with constant interruptions in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to make critical decisions, based on the integration of information from multiple sources that may be discrepant, in high-stress situations
  • Demonstrate strong organizational skills and keen attention to detail on assignments, projects, and staff performance while meeting all assigned deadlines
  • Knowledge of federal and state public assistance rules, regulations, and processes as applied in Washington State
  • Ability to communicate effectively in person and in writing with management, peers, direct staff, clients, and the public
  • Someone willing to have difficult conversations who try to find mutual resolution and support for the issue at hand

 

Who should apply?

 Professionals with one of the following:

  • One year of experience as a Social Service Specialist 4 at DSHS 
  • Two years of experience as a Social Service Specialist 3 at DSHS
  • Four years of experience as a Social Service Specialist 2 at DSHS 
  • A master's degree in social services, human services, behavioral sciences, criminal law/justice or an allied field and one year of paid social service experience equivalent to a Social Service Specialist 3
  • A bachelor's degree in social services, human services, behavioral sciences, criminal law/justice or an allied field, and five years of paid social service experience performing functions equivalent to a Social Service Specialist 2

Please note a two-year master's degree in one of the above fields that included a practicum may be substituted for one year of paid social service experience.
