Infectious Waste Handler - Environmental Service Patient Care

Job Description:

Providence is calling a Infectious Waste Handler (1.0 FTE, 40 hours per week Variable Shift) to work in the Environmental Service Patient Care at Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia, WA.

The Infectious Waste Handler is responsible for collecting and processing the hospital's regulated medical waste and preparing the waste for off-site transport and processing to a Washington State processing/disposal site.
In this position you will:
Perform a variety of regulated and medical waste handling duties in support of maintaining a sanitary, safe, attractive hospital environment:
Collect, transport, and segregate hospital generated sharps and other regulated medical waste materials.
Package medical waste into specialized medical waste containers.
Label waste containers with safety stickers.
Provide assistance with loading/unloading functions.
Receive and process medical waste from off-site medical sources.
Participate in scheduled meetings and educational in-service meetings, as required.
Handle Hazardous Materials and Waste and are trained for Hazardous Materials and Waste Management. Comply with facility and unit specific safety/infection control procedures and personal safety practices & proper equipment handling:
Perform other Environmental Services related functions as required by Supervisor, Environmental Services.
Operate and maintain waste handling equipment.
Maintain a safe and sanitary work environment.
Practice safe work habits to prevent personal injuries and equipment damage.
Work in accordance with the instructions of posted schedules and written procedures and is able to perform efficiently with minimum of supervision.
Perform coordination functions for waste pick-up with hospital department Heads and Supervisors.
Prepare shipping documentation records.
Monitor and is accountable for availability of shipping/packaging supplies.
Participate in department or organizational activities as scheduled or necessary:
Participate in scheduled meetings and educational in-service sessions as required
Attend at least one continuing education experience during the appraisal year, either in-house or an outside offering
Demonstrate knowledge of department protocols regarding meetings, dress code, confidentiality and expectations for continuing improvement:

Communicate in a courteous manner during all contacts with patients, visitors, and hospital staff.
Is well groomed and wears a clean and neat uniform daily.
Wear hospital identification badge at all times while on duty.
Read, understand and follow detailed instructions.
Demonstrate ability to work with patients, managers and clients of various ages' groups:
Consider patient, manager/client background and work history to effectuate positive work experience/relationship.
Respond appropriately according to age related needs and considerations.
Qualifications:
Required qualifications for this position include:
Valid Washington State Driver's license in good standing
